Italy has long been a favourite for Turkish travellers who want to see both the vineyards of Tuscany and the history of Rome. But how exactly does the first step of that journey, the visa application, unfold? Below we walk through the process for an Italian Schengen tourist or business visa step by step, along with the most common pitfalls and tips that can improve your chances of approval. Italy generally accepts visa applications from Turkey through an authorised application centre. Across Turkey this service is mostly handled by centres such as VFS Global or iData; however, the channel can vary depending on your city and the period in question. For this reason, we recommend always confirming the application channel and the authorised centre directly with Italy's official representation or the official website of the centre it has appointed.
The application centre handles tasks such as collecting documents, capturing biometric data (fingerprints and a photo) and returning the passport. The visa decision itself is made not by the centre but directly by the Italian consulate.
The process begins by booking an appointment through the application centre's system. Because slots can fill up quickly, especially in summer and around public holidays, it is wise to plan well ahead of your travel date. Schengen rules allow an application to be made at the earliest six months before the trip; use this window to your advantage.

A practical rule: do not make non-refundable payments for flights or accommodation before your visa is approved. A reservation is enough.
